About Sha the Manic Depressive

Sha is an intelligent, kind and sensitive Oxford University graduate whose life is at the mercy of a devastating mental illness bipolar disorder (manic depression). Although Sha is house trained and generally really rather nice she is prone to turning into a scary beast with angry outbursts, severe depression and uncontrollable hypomania which at times prevent her from having an ordinary life and therefore a fulltime job. Although she is grateful for government benefits they do not begin to compete with an average Oxbridge graduate salary.

More Information

Sha grew up in Cornwall and moved to Oxford to study in 2000. After five years, despite struggling with a severe mental illness she managed to graduate with a degree in psychology from St. Catherine’s College. Since then she has remained in Oxford but has been unable to work due to bipolar disorder. Sha is actively trying to get back into full-time employment by working as a research assistant and classroom assistant for a few hours a week on a voluntary basis.

Far from being a lazy person, Sha spends her time trying to make her life with bipolar disorder as bearable as possible and putting effort into things that most healthy people can take for granted. She adheres to a regular exercise routine (swimming four times a week), tries to cook herself healthy, regular meals wherever possible and endeavors to keep to a sensible sleeping pattern because routine is an essential part of treating the illness. These things may seem simple to some - indeed when well Sha is able to function as well as your average person (even better, she likes to think!) but when suffering from symptoms of depression or hypomania, every day tasks can be very challenging.

Sha invests time in researching her illness and completing cognitive-behavioural therapy exercises. As hobbies, she likes stomping in the park in her blue polka-dot wellies, theatre stuff and making colourful decorations. She keeps a blog, maintains a few web pages and is trying to write a novel.

Despite investing much hard work in getting through each day, Sha has no sizable income to speak of so is appealing to rich boys who’ve landed on their feet with minimum effort to donate generously. Call it payment for listening to so many of them wittering on over the last six years.

Sha is 165 cm tall, weighs about 60 kg, has long, wavy, red (not ginger) hair, blue eyes, hips and breasts. She has no regional accent to speak of but is proud of her Celtic roots. When she grows up she would like to be a school teacher or a private detective.
